Environment

Environment-conscious Facilities and Equipment ①

We are helping to reduce CO2 emissions by installing solar panels on the rooftops of our own warehouses, which we have built, and by introducing vehicles that help reduce negative impact on environment, in addition to self-consumption of solar power.

  • Operation of warehouses equipped with solar panels

In redevelopment of our own warehouses, we have installed solar panel equipments with the aim of becoming an environment-conscious warehouse. And also, in selecting of leased warehouses, we prioritize ones equipped with solar panels.
We will continue to operate warehouses at our distribution centers to promote the use of renewable energy, such as solar power.

    Examples of Introduction

We firstly introduce a solar power generation facility on the rooftop of the first building of Katsushima Center in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo.
This is expected to result in an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of nearly 136tons.* CO2 emissions are calculated by using factors of external agency

  • Introducing environment-friendly vehicles

We are promoting the introduction of eco-friendly vehicles. The hybrid vehicles have been partly introduced as company-using vehicles, and 100% of our distribution centers are equipped with battery-powered forklifts, with a total of approximately 500 vehicles.

Environment-conscious Facilities and Equipment ②

We actively promote the introduction and adoption of facilities and equipment that contribute to business continuity, and we will continue to promote the introduction of LED lighting equipment as one of our efforts to reduce GreenHouse Gases.
In addition, we prioritize warehouses equipped with LED lighting in the selection of leased warehouses that we operate by ourselves.

  • LED introduction at our owned facilities

    • Based on sites About 40% 13 out of 33 sites (including partial LED introduction)
    • Based on areas About 60% (Ratio of area owned by the company to about 430,000 square meters)

Targets are our own centers as of April 1, 2023.

Provision of services with low environmental impact

  • Modal shift to Rail transport

We are promoting a modal shift from trucking to railroad transportation, and we are working with our customers to create a transportation scheme that is effective in reducing CO2 emissions.

    Example of Improvements

All-truck transportation with one-way 650km between the inland customer plant and the loading port in Thailand is transported inland from empty containers taken from CY to inland by rail. And after cargo loading at the plant and short-distance transportation to the railway station, the logistics scheme is changed to rail transportation to the container yard at sea port.

  • Reduce negative impact on environment by using returnable containers

By developing and introducing returnable containers for cargoes transport, we are helping to reduce CO2 emissions by cutting down the number of vehicles and the number of maritime containers. We are also reducing the use of wooden packaging materials by using metallic containers.

    • Use of returnable metal pallets.

    • Improvement in transportation efficiency of metal fences.
Large improvement in transportation efficiency by designing a foundation that enables vertical transportation of metal fences, which were conventionally stacked horizontally and accumulatively

Reducing Wastes

To reduce the consumption of resources in our business activities, we are working with our customers to reduce wastes emissions by repeatedly using cardboard boxes for packaging and plastic tapes used to fix cargo.
In particular, we introduce two examples of 2R (Reduce and Reuse) that are regarded as priorities in the White Paper of Ministry of the Environment.

  • Examples of Reduce and Reuse

    Utilization of the cardboard boxes

After close consultation and cooperation with customers, we are currently implementing initiatives to use corrugated cardboard boxes for storage and transportation rather than one time. A distribution center divides storage locations according to the size of reused corrugated boxes, and uses ones in appropriate sizes according to products capacity.

  • Examples of Reduce and Reuse

    Lashing ropes for packaging

In addition to the plastic film used to fix carton boxes on pallets, we have devised ways to use the plastic rope called "Hachimaki" in consideration of the cargo characteristics and applications.
With this “Hachimaki”, the multiple carton cargo is wound and tied, and temporarily stored in the distribution center operated by us.
Once a carton cargo is temporarily broken up in units for its shipment after storage, this "Hachimaki" is gathered in a specific storage box in the distribution center and used again to tie in another cargo.
Once used, we reduces the amount of plastic resources that are discarded, thereby contributing to the reduction of wastes.

A special box has been set up in the special space for "Hachi-maki"
